Day Two

Filed under: Personal — by teofilo @ 9:31 pm

I didn’t exactly intend to spend most of the day at Petrified Forest National Park, but somehow it just kind of happened.  I drove there from Show Low in the morning and went all through the park taking pictures, focusing particularly on the cultural sites that I was most interested in but taking notice of the views and the ubiquitous petrified wood as well.  It’s a great place.  When I was done there I headed west on I-40, stopping for gas in Holbrook then continuing on to Winslow to spend the night.

  1. The wikipedia entry suggests theft of the petrified wood is a problem. Why do people steal it?

(Also, lovely photos; I hope you’re having a relaxed trip.)

  2. Good question. There are signs all over the park telling people not to, so it clearly is a significant problem, but as many of the signs themselves point out, there’s no shortage of petrified wood outside the park and plenty of places to buy it legally for quite reasonable prices.

I suspect there’s just a certain mindset a lot of people have that encourages this kind of thing. I don’t know quite what it is, though, and it doesn’t make any sense to me at all.

Glad you like the pictures. The trip has indeed been nice and relaxing so far.

  3. Meteor Crater tomorrow? The one time I went there, I arrived a little after 5 to discover they lock the place up. Fuck.

  4. I really don’t have a whole lot of interest in Meteor Crater, actually. I’ve heard it’s nice, but it’s not really my kind of thing. Instead I’m going to Homolovi before they lock it up forever.

  5. Not been there, looks interesting. I did see Wupatki once and enjoyed that.

  7. I can see why people are stealing the wood…but the important question is, are they taking the lizards??? Are there lizards in the petrified forest? Thanks for all the pictures! I’ve been wanting to go there but it looks like it’s definitely not a quick stop. Next time 🙂 And you should go to the Crater. I think it would be cool. Glad you’re having a good time!

  9. I don’t mind smileys.

There are allegedly lizards at Petrified Forest, though I didn’t see any. May have been because it’s winter. It could be a quick stop, but there’s a lot to see if you want to stay longer, which I did.

I’m still thinking no on the crater. I’m in Flag now (at Late for the Train, in fact) and there’s no shortage of things to do around here.
