  17. 14: The decision on honors is made entirely on the basis of the thesis (at least in my department; it varies). They actually make the decision during the thesis defense; I had to wait outside for a few minutes while they deliberated then they called me back in to announce their decision. It was rather nerve-wracking.

  19. It wasn’t really that bad, actually. The defense went very well, and the department pretty much always gives honors if the thesis is at all decent. There are some other departments that are much stricter about this stuff, but mine’s very laid-back.
