Sunlit Water

I drank two cans of Coke today.  Whenever I open up a can of Coke, I instantly remember that I hate Coke and I wonder why the hell I just opened a can of the stuff.  In this case it was because I bought a twelve-pack of it for the inaugural meeting of the linguistics club of which I am the president and I figured I might as well drink some since it was there.  Bad idea; when I went to dinner afterwards I didn’t feel hungy at all even though I was, and eating all the food I got was a little difficult.  Then tonight I went to get some pizza while I waited for my laundry to dry and the soda machine was out of order so they gave me a can of Coke instead of the cup of root beer I normally get and the same damn thing happened; I could barely finish the two slices I got.

I can’t believe how much of this stuff I used to drink in high school.  What was I thinking?

  1. Yeah, it’s a weird thing about guys and their sody-pop. My best friend for years drank a 2-litre bottle every single day.

Personally, I can’t stand carbonated beverages. They burn my nose and my throat and make my stomach swell up. If coke has been sitting in a glass for a while and is slightly flat, I can handle it.

The beverage I really don’t understand is seltzer.

  2. I like seltzer; it’s refreshing. The thing I mainly don’t like about soda is all the sugar (and damn is it ever a lot).

  3. I stopped drinking soft drinks a long time back, but have returned to them as mixers now that I’m drinking alcohol. I like those half-cans (something about 100 Calories) which is as much mixed drinks as I want. Those are the main exceptions to my ‘no high-fructose corn syrup’ rule.

  4. Coke has no taste. I was a Pepsi girl, but I could never finish a second can, and they don’t keep in the fridge. The sun over Sevilla and the weirdness of the Pepsi there cured me. So I can’t tolerate carbonation anymore, but sometimes I get a hankering for root beer or Dr Pepper, and I’d like to refresh my memory as to the taste of Tab.

  5. Oh man, I was such a soda drinker in high school and college, and in the past 5 years have given it up entirely. Now the very rare times I have a Coke (for caffeination purposes, usually) I’m knocked on my ass by the sugar.

Seltzer is my favorite beverage. It’s water, with fizz! Fizz! Hooray for fizz!

  6. Coke most definitely has a taste.

Straight-up plain carbonated water is nice but what’s really great is tonic water. Unfortunately it’s got about as much sugar as coke.

  7. Yeah, I used to like tonic water a lot until I realized that it was actually loaded with sugar and the only reason it didn’t taste sweet was because of all the quinine.

  10. I am a big fan of carbonated water too. But what to call it? Seltzer? Club soda? Fizzy water? Soda water?

  11. And tonic water is very nice as a gin adulterant, not so much by itself.

  12. In my family we generally say “fizzy water.” For a while we were calling it “sippy water” after my cousin, who was five or so at the time, called it that and everyone thought it was adorable. He’s twelve now and doesn’t like it when people mention that story.

  13. I like “club soda” best. But often find myself slipping into calling it “seltzer” which I find affected.

  14. I started drinking San Pelligrino. No HFCS and or caffiene.
