“Not A Nickel! Not A Dime!”

“No more money for Israel’s crimes!”

Thus chanted the protesters I happened upon while walking back from the ATM just now.  It was the usual lot, a mix of Arabs, black Muslims and aging leftists.  I don’t know what exactly they were demanding; maybe cutting off aid or some sort of divestment.  I think they were mostly there just to protest the recent unpleasantness.

I’m never very impressed with efforts like this; for one thing, they obviously don’t accomplish anything on a practical level.  No one’s going to stop giving money to Israel because they saw these guys on the street.  But even aside from considerations like that, I find them unpleasant.  I guess it’s the implicit idea behind it, that if you can get enough people together and make enough noise, you can get what you want no matter who opposes you.  This may or may not be true, but I don’t think it should be.  That’s not how decisions get made in the kind of society I want to live in.
